One of the ministerial emphases of the Community of Christ Order of Bishops is to provide spiritual formation experiences that support our development as “Ministers of Generosity.”
We invite you to join us in the spiritual practice of “Dwelling in The Word”. Dwelling in The Word is a scripture study practice of intentionally spending time on one particular passage of scripture.
Each Monday we will post a new generosity-based scripture. To read and comment on the current scripture, please click on “This Week’s Verse” above. This blog is designed for us to interact with each other. It will not be a place for the Presiding Bishopric to respond to questions, but a place to gain insight and understanding from each other’s thoughts about the scripture each week.
The Presiding Bishopric looks forward to walking with you on this path.

I find the passage for Monday, 14 Sept, quite intriguing. Do we really believe in such equality through sharing? I need to think through the implications of this one more.

I agree, William. It’s a different definition of “equality” than I’ve learned in my own life and culture. A definition that does not have “evenness”, “sameness”, or “value” attached to the item given/shared. Perhaps the value is attached on the depth of need instead. If the need is the same, then the generosity to meet the needs would be “equal”? Apples and oranges aren’t as different from each other when viewed in this light.

Once again, I find the scripture for this week intriguing: D & C 42:9b
Every man shall be made accountable unto me a steward over his own property. . . . inasmuch as is sufficient for himself and family.
After much study over the years, I have come to the conclusion that the concept of “private property” so dear to most today, constitutes a major problem.
I like the words of the hymn that state: we give Thee but thine own. God owns all. We are stewards. Therefore, no such thing as private property.
Some make the distinction that there are things that we possess at the moment, i.e., we use them, but we don’t own them.
Joseph may have been struggling toward a similar understanding as he experimented with the community building process.
Thus, our “property” consists of that which we possess, sufficient for us and our family. That’s our individual stewardship to use “in the manner designed of God.” The rest is the individual stewardships of others or part of our collective stewardship, with most of the earth’s resources falling into the latter category.
